Curriculum Vitae

CVCURRICULUM VITAE • POETRY

DANIELLE MITCHELL was born on the cusp Los Angeles County near the San Gabriel Mountains where she developed bad lungs & poetry. After graduating cum laude from the University of Redlands in 2008 with Bachelor’s Degrees in Women’s Studies & Creative Writing she moved to Long Beach to learn to breathe. In 2010, Danielle was selected as one of ten emerging poets in Pop Art: Anthology of Southern California Poetry (Moon Tide Press). Later that year, she authored a chapbook, Poem Food, about which G. Murray Thomas said, “[Danielle] uses fresh, often surprising, images to splay open our emotional turmoil, both private & shared.”

In 2011, Danielle was accepted to the Community of Writers at Squaw Valley Poetry Workshop where she was privileged to work with such poets as Major Jackson, Sharon Olds, Brenda Hillman, Cathy Park Hong & Robert Hass. Danielle has also worked with Southern California poets Suzanne Lummis & Brendan Constantine through the LMU Extension Program.

In 2013, Danielle founded The Poetry Lab, a writer’s group that builds community through workshops, readings & craft seminars. In addition to directing The Poetry Lab, Danielle hosts poetry events such as the Orange County Regional Youth Slam. Danielle’s poems have appeared in Bellevue Literary Review, Harpur Palate, Stirring, The Four Way Review, Connotation Press, Union Station Magazine, decomP & Day One among others. She is a recipient of the 2015 Editor’s Prize from Mary & the 2014 Editor’s Choice Award from The Mas Tequila Review. She has been a featured reader at Beyond Baroque, Loyola Marymount University, the San Gabriel Valley Literary Festival, the Muckenthaler Cultural Center, & the Long Beach Poetry Festival.

COMMENTS

“Danielle Mitchell uses fresh, often surprising, images to splay open our emotional turmoil, both private and shared.”

– G. Murray Thomas, Editor, Poetix

“Verve, wit, bold associations and visionary conjunctions distinguish the prose poems of Danielle Mitchell’s debut collection, Makes the Daughter-in-Law Cry. With allusions to David Bowie and Heraclitus, a geographical range from Chicago to Afghanistan to the stars, as well as deeply private family intimacies as subject matter, Mitchell reveals new worlds of wonder and absurdity with a dark brilliance that is entirely her own. Although she warns us in open that [we]’ll never get out alive, in another she asserts that even though [t]he future is behind us now[,] I thought I should stand here and sing. I’m so glad she does. This is a delightful book full of marvelous mix-ups and wisdom.”

– Gail Wronsky, Judge of the Clockwise Chapbook Series and author of Imperfect Pastorals

“Danielle Mitchell is sending secret coded telegrams from a dark, underground kitchen. She is cooking with the usual ingredients of exotic adjectives and suggestive enjambment, filling her poems with lust, mischief, loneliness, and yes, food. But Poem Food is not really about what we eat; it’s about what eats us. Grab a copy and dig in.”

– Mindy Nettifee, Author of Rise of the Trust Fall
