Poem from Beggars and Cheeseburgers

Learning

Power lines follow the 395 out to Kernville
chasing us into the desert. The folded
safety traps look like dead birds collapsed
on their backs, but they keep the wires
from touching. We drive the winding road
skirting Lake Isabella, counting them.
